Applying Public-Private Partnerships to Urban Governance: Observations from Taiwan Experiences

Organizer:

International Program on Urban Governance at National Taipei University

Purpose:

The PPP Knowledge Lab defines Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) as "a long-term contract between a private party and a government entity, for providing a public asset or service, in which the private party bears significant risk and management responsibility and remuneration is linked to performance." This new governance model offers a different approach to deliver public services or tackle urban problems. Many examples can be found in Taiwan such as Taipei Smart City projects, building and operation of social housing, etc. The goal of this essay competition is to increase international students' understanding about the adoption of the PPP strategy for urban development in Taiwan. It also aims to help build students' capacity of project design and analysis.

Eligibility:

All international graduate students who study at National Taipei University are eligible to apply.

Application Period:

Monday, September 17, 2018 to Friday, November 23, 2018 by 17:00.

Awards:

First Place Award: A merit-based scholarship of NT$ 6,000. (1 piece of work)
Second Place Award: A merit-based scholarship of NT$ 4,500. (2 pieces of work)

Submission Instructions:

  1. Submitted essays shall be written in English with a length between 1,500 and 2,000 words (excluding diagrams, tables, footnotes or bibliography). Be sure to type your text in a standard 12-point Times New Roman, 1.5 spaced, and include page numbers.
  2. All references cited in the text must appear in the reference list with a format in Harvard referencing style.
  3. Please submit your essay as an email attachment, saved in pdf format to ipugmuc@gm.ntpu.edu.tw. Both the subject line of the email and the title of the pdf attachment should read IPUG Essay Competition Surname First Name (e.g., IPUG Essay Competition Feeny Alex)
  4. Please do not show the author’s name or expose any information that may imply authorship in your work other than in the application form and the file name.

Announcement of the Results:

The results will be announced on the IPUG website (http://www.ntpu.edu.tw/ipug/) on December 11, 2018. The organizer reserves the right to announce the results earlier or later than the scheduled date.
